The project covered two apartment blocks with a combined roof area of approximately 1,430 m². Both retained their existing torch-on membranes as the substrate for a Winkler H₂O liquid-applied refurbishment.
Similar roofs, coordinated as one project.
The first block covered approximately 680 m² and the second approximately 750 m². Their roof fields had direct falls and no parapets, so the main drainage challenge sat at the through-roof outlets rather than at conventional parapet outlets.
Every outlet passed through the roof construction and connected to a downpipe below. That made the transition between the H₂O membrane and each outlet one of the most important details on the project.
Retain
Use the suitable existing torch-on membrane as the refurbishment substrate.
Drain
Carry water along the direct roof falls into the through-roof outlets and downpipes.
Maintain
Provide a permanent cable lifeline for safer future roof access.
What formed the project system.
The project was more than a coating applied over an old roof. Its performance depended on the condition and preparation of the existing torch-on membrane, continuity of the H₂O waterproofing at every outlet and the way future access was planned after completion.
EXISTING TORCH-ON MEMBRANE
The existing bituminous waterproofing remained in place where it was suitable to receive the refurbishment system after inspection and preparation.
SUBSTRATE PREPARATION
The roof surface and local details were prepared before coating so the new liquid system was applied over a clean and stable background.
WINKLER H₂O
The H₂O system formed a continuous exposed waterproofing layer over the prepared torch-on membrane across both apartment blocks.
THROUGH-ROOF OUTLETS
Each outlet passed through the roof and connected to a downpipe below. The membrane-to-outlet transition was treated as a primary waterproofing detail.
DIRECT ROOF FALLS
With no parapets around the roof edges, the existing falls carried water directly toward the through-roof drainage points.
PERMANENT CABLE LIFELINE
A permanent cable safety system was installed after the waterproofing work to support safer inspection and maintenance movement across the completed roofs.
On a roof without parapets, the field may look simple, but the outlets remain critical. The membrane has to stay continuous as water leaves the roof surface and enters the downpipe connection below.
The sequence across both apartment blocks.
- 01Survey the existing torch-on roof
The retained membrane and its details were reviewed to identify the preparation required before the liquid system was applied.
- 02Prepare the roof surface
The existing bituminous surface was cleaned and prepared to provide a stable background for the refurbishment system.
- 03Coordinate outlets and downpipes
The through-roof outlets were treated as complete drainage connections, not as isolated holes in the roof field.
- 04Apply the Winkler H₂O system
The liquid waterproofing was installed over the prepared torch-on membrane and carried continuously through the roof details.
- 05Check completed continuity
The roof fields, outlet transitions and edge conditions were reviewed as one finished waterproofing surface.
- 06Install the permanent cable lifeline
After the waterproofing work was completed, the roof safety system was installed for future inspection and maintenance access.
The completed project.
Both apartment blocks were refurbished with one clear approach: retain the suitable torch-on substrate, apply a continuous Winkler H₂O system, keep the direct drainage route working and leave a permanent safe-access solution for maintenance teams.
Finishing the waterproofing is not the end of the roof strategy.
The roof still has to be inspected, maintained and accessed without unnecessary risk to people or the membrane.
This page records the confirmed project approach.
It does not add unconfirmed primers, reinforcement products, application rates or lifeline fixing details. Those items must follow the actual project specification, substrate assessment and current technical documentation.
